We are delighted to announce the recruitment of two PhD scholars, JayJay Karumazondo and Fiona Gambanga, under the Southern Africa Research Capacity Network (SOFAR).
JayJay’s medical anthropology research explores the meanings and experiences of well-being—what it means to ‘feel good’—among adolescents in Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, Fiona’s epidemiology research focuses on understanding how hypertensive disorders of pregnancy contribute to the development of chronic hypertension in young adults in Zimbabwe.
Recruitment is also underway at Zambart (Zambia) and Instituto Nacional de Saúde (INS, Mozambique) to expand the cohort of exceptional scholars joining the SOFAR network.
About SOFAR
SOFAR is a collaborative research initiative that equips early- and mid-career researchers with the skills to tackle infectious disease challenges in Africa. The program trains MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral fellows across Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Mozambique through innovative approaches such as blended learning, split-site doctorates, and digital learning platforms.
A Collaborative Effort
SOFAR is a partnership between two leading European institutions—Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)—and three African research institutions:
Biomedical Research and Training Institute (BRTI), Harare, Zimbabwe
Zambart at the University of Zambia (Zambart), Lusaka, Zambia
Instituto Nacional de Saúde (INS), Maputo, Mozambique
This collaboration creates a vibrant and supportive research environment where MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral fellows can thrive.
Funding and Support
This project has received funding from the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP3) under the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking (Project No. 101145636)
