Background
In adolescence, health-related behaviours are adopted that will have substantial positive or negative impacts on the individual’s short- and long-term health, educational attainment, and employment prospects. However, few adolescents have any contact with health services, especially for health promotion and disease prevention, and services are not always appropriate for their needs.
Study aim(s)
To investigate the acceptability, feasibility, and cost-effectiveness of comprehensive health and well-being check-ups for adolescents in schools and communities in three African cities: Cape Coast in Ghana; Mwanza in Tanzania; and Chitungwiza in Zimbabwe.
Study design
Y-Check is a hybrid effectiveness-implementation study investigating both implementation process and screening, referral and treatment outcomes.
The study comprised three phases:
Development and piloting a package of services (health screening, management and referral of 20 conditions and risky behaviours)
Implementation and evidence generation
Knowledge dissemination and translation.
